More Scales

Of these four scales, the blues scale is by far the most important. It sounds great played over blues chords, which means you can hold your own with most types of popular music. There is one fewer step in the scale than in other scales, and the larger intervals create some interesting effects.

The two ethnic scales are really harmonic minor scales borrowed from other keys, but interesting things result when you change the starting point.

And finally, the whole tone scale uses no half steps, and seems "rootless" or "aimless". It is sometimes used in modern music.
